On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) testing will be required for all motorcycles in the United States by model year 2024. The California Air Recourses Board (CARB) has been in the process of evaluating the current European regulations and deciding how they want to create the US motorcycle regulations. CARB is currently testing motorcycles and collecting data to gain a better understanding of what they plan to make mandatory. A scenario that manufactures are hopeful for is that CARB decides to harmonize with the European regulations to make both similar.
In preparation of the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) new emission standards for On-Road Motorcycles (ONMC), WinterPark has invested in a SuperFlow CycleDyn chassis dynamometer. There are many benefits that come with owning our own in-house dyno such as year-round testing and the ability to follow prescribed drive traces in a safe controlled environment. The dyno is setup with a Burke-Porter driver aid program so cycles, such as the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC), can be performed. In addition to dyno testing, WinterPark has licensed motorcycle drivers who can perform on-road testing to validate calibrations and generate statistical data under real world driving conditions.
Since 2018 WinterPark has been working with motorcycle manufacturers to develop their OBD systems to comply with the current European motorcycle regulations. We are able to apply the experience we have in the automotive sector and apply those lessons learned to the motorcycle industry, so our customers are prepared for the up coming CARB regulations. We are active participants in the CARB working group meetings to help develop the new motorcycle regulations and stay informed during the rule making process.
